Irrigation

After this dry May we desperately began to feel the need for anther way to irrigate the fields. Up until now we had been watering the greenhouse and fields from the house. The dry May weather was certainly over taxing the house system as we found ourselves irrigating for nearly 12 hours a day.

Jeff arrived with his excavator and began digging a pit in a wet corner of the upper field. A spring is located there. He then plumbed the pit and filled it with all the boulders he could find, creating plenty of pockets to hold water. This was covered with road fabric and soil. The newly constructed underground reservoir began to fill up and we soon started irrigating the parched fields from this gravity fed system. Of course the rains began to fall the next week and has continued regularly since!
